She has experience as a Primary Care Physician, having previously worked at a busy, award-winning naturopathic clinic in North Seattle. She has managed both acute and chronic diseases; pharmaceutical medications; herbal and botanical medicines; is familiar with herb/supplement-drug interactions and the safe use thereof; and is familiar with all aspects of Family Medicine, Primary Care and Naturopathic Specialist Services. She has performed annual wellness exams for adults and young-adults and is well equipped to navigate the Allopathic Medical world, including familiarity with how insurance works she used to accept all major forms of insurance. However, to provide you with better care, she no longer works with insurance companies.
Dr. Kovner is unique in that she can manage musculoskeletal issues from acute whiplash to chronic migraines and sciatica. She manages both men's and women’s hormone imbalances; gut health and metabolic issues like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
She also ran one of North Seattle's most successful counseling programs for anxiety and depression, Mind Body Medicine.
Dr. Kovner graduated from Bastyr University and earned her Naturopathic board Certification by taking the NPLEX licensing exam and before graduation, she accepted an offer to join a beautiful clinical space as a solo practitioner. Dr. Kovner was directly involved in helping Wake Forest University’s Hospital’s Clinic For Integrative Medicine design a clinical position for an ND. This is the first program of its kind in a major North Carolina (or any southern state) hospital setting.
Prior to medical school, she worked at LSU-New Orleans where she co-authored 2 publications in peer reviewed journals, one involving an NIH research grant looking at green tea extract in MS and gained clinical expertise in managing neurodegenerative disease with a focus on Multiple Sclerosis. It was here that her interest in neuroscience and the clinical relevance and application of botanical medicines took root.
Unbeknownst to her Principal Investigator (PI), she began teaching yoga to MS study patients who subsequently began, in a group, experiencing statistically significant improvements in balance and memory. Her PI rewarded her by having her trained to be a yoga teacher in order to properly study the positive effects seen and documented in our study population.
This was where her integrated clinical approach was born having been trained to do precise neurological testing in a clinical and research setting by the same PI, a neurologist who then guided her clinical application of therapeutic yoga. This contributes to the truly integrative and holistic nature of her clinical practice.
During medical school, she participated in extensive training in the naturopathic management of Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. She helped design Bastyr University’s pilot Parkinson’s Summer School Program and has helped design a handful of retreats since. During her doctoral training, she also received her massage license (LMT) with a focus in gait assessment and craniosacral techniques. This supports her interest in movement, myofascial, musculoskeletal and neuro-immune-gut-fascial work Visceral Synthesis.
During her second year at Bastyr, Dr. Kovner elected to go to Germany for a summer to study with her colleagues and mentors at the Kneipp School in Bavaria. There they stayed and studied and enjoyed immersive Kneipp Therapy treatments at the Sebastiánium Bad Wörishofenin, a few hours outside of Munich, Germany. She then traveled to Bad Sulza to meet with the owners of the Toskana Therme and then went to Bad Orb to experience their second facility. This experience inspired her clinical practice and fuels her dreams of a future natural health/eco-tourism packaged similarly to her didactic trip to Germany.
Starting in her first quarter at Bastyr, Dr. Kovner completed a fellowship in naturopathic clinical herbalism under Dr. Sheila Kingsbury. She studied and understands the FDA model of Good Manufacturing Processes (GMPs) and learned firsthand how to produce herbal medicine from seed to seal. During this training, she studied various techniques used at both small herbal farms and large-scale herbal medicine production farms and laboratories in preparation for her own better understanding and application of good manufacturing practices and gold standards in herbal medicine.
Dr. Kovner has been working with me for a year to get my health back on track. She is empathic and listens to my concerns, more appealing is the fact that she explains all the processes in great detail, how each formula assists in healing and also gives me a voice and choice in the treatment.
She has a fine manner and makes telemedicine a breeze. It’s been very convenient consulting on the phone, and I don’t find it any different than meeting her in person. I’m receiving attentive care and it has taken the stress out of commuting from a different city, and especially in these unprecedented times her consultation and support have been a stress buster. I hope more people have a chance to interact with her and participate in holistic healing. – SC
Of all the practitioners that cross my path there is only one Dr. Blake. She is a precious human being. She sees the need to take you under her wings, and gently nurture you back like a loving mother. Her compassion is beyond anything you can ask. No price can be place on her work. Phenomenal knowledgeable and kind... keep it up ... great work – SD
I went to Dr Blake with issues concerning my bowels. Not able to go to the bathroom. She was very helpful in suggesting many ways to get me regulated and provided me some holistic ways of getting things to move. She has a great bedside manner. Just a loving person who wants to help you have a more healthy, productive life. – BW
One of the absolute best doctors my family has ever had the pleasure of knowing! She truly listens to your concerns and approaches your healthcare in such a wholistic and integrative manner that you may be surprised at the connections between your daily lifestyle, mental health, and physical wellbeing. This lady has lots of love and knowledge and care to give, so don’t pass up the opportunity to meet with her even once! You certainly won’t experience the like within traditional western medicine, and she is truly an integrative specialist that won’t hesitate to tell you the truth of the situation, yet in a very kind and understanding manner with a true focus on education! Love Love Love! We highly recommend her to all of our friends, family, and customers! – Jessica
Dr. Kovner, I need to tell you that you changed my life for the better. I was just thinking back to how I used to be and how much happier and healthier I am now that I have healed a lot of wounds just by being myself, and allowing safety in my mind and spirit to take up space. I'm very grateful to you and your work ❤️ you've changed my whole perspective and it has transformed the way I am raising my girls and the way I accept myself. I finally got over my fear ... and I am much more at peace and trusting of myself and my own actions. I pride myself now over being a safe person for others to speak to if needed but not to take on their feelings or take their actions personally. Like it blows my mind how different things are and how I process my life and perceptions now. So thank you. ZS
